Everyday Myths

Sheffield, June 2018

Director/Performer: Malaika Cunningham

Writer: Joseph Houlders

Sound Designer: Lee Affen

Producer: Tony Gullian

Everyday Myths was a collaboration with Grimm & Co, and the Canal & River Trust as part of Hinterlands, a new arts programme that connects local communities and promotes wellbeing, supported by Arts Council England and the Arts Council of Wales.

It was performed along the Sheffield-Tinsley Canal and at Migration Matters Festival (Theatre Delicatessen).

An interactive audio walk interweaving stories from the communities who live along the canal with ancient secrets hidden in the waterways.

The Sheffield & Tinsley Canal is a surreal place rich in history, but often hidden from view. During this performance, humans and creatures alike could hear of journeys and homecomings, beasts and heroines, and find artefacts, some real and some imagined, and share their own stories too!

This audio artwork was created through a series of Story Swap Cafes and workshops with residents of all ages from The Wicker, Attercliffe, Tinsley and Rotherham hosted by The Bare Project.

This project was phase one on an ongoing collaboration with the Canal and River Trust. See Hinterlands 2221.
