Common Threads is an outdoor arts project focussing on the experiences of women in public space. The project seeks to ‘soften’ our city and welcome women from all backgrounds to co-create a temporary front room space in the centre of Sheffield. This space will then be animated with a range of creative activities and community meals over a weekend in September ’24.

This ‘front room’ structure will be co-designed through a series of 4 workshops with different women’s groups around the city. Then, in September, we will create the space together. Drawing upon traditional weaving techniques from around the world, women from across the city will share their textile skills with the public as they transform a grey urban space into a vibrant front room. Once built, the space will be animated with music, feasts, workshops, debate, rituals and conversation. At the end, the front room will be ritually unravelled, with its components distributed amongst the groups to be re-used, re-purposed, and re-woven.

This is part of the Sheffield Creative Communities programme which is managed by Site Gallery. The grant programme is part of Sheffield City Council’s Sheffield Culture Showcase, funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) as part of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and is supported by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).
