The Bare Project is a theatre and interactive arts company based in Sheffield.

Our form changes from project to project: sometimes it’s a script and a stage, other times it’s an audio walk, an installation in a shopfront, a feast, or a festival. We respond to what is around us. Our work is often created with communities, and other artists who join us.

Is it theatre?” Pass.

Here’s a list of things we refer to when we get together to make stuff:

  •       Fictions that spill over into real life
  •       Carnivals, big exuberant spectacles
  •       Conversations with strangers over food
  •       Scary stuff: ghosts, environmental collapse
  •       Magic realism
  •       Unanswerable questions
  •       Music that makes you move around and admire things
  •       The electric thing of art that hits you and stays with you

We hope you’ll come along to something we’ve made some time soon.

Our core team are director Malaika Cunningham, writer Joe Houlders, sound designer Lee Affen, and producer Sally Proctor. Thanks for visiting our website. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram for news about what we’re making and when we’re performing.

Our Vision & Values

Our vision is to create lasting, curious, playful, and political artwork for and with people. Through imagination and solidarity-building we aim to contribute to the creation of an environmentally just society. All of this work is underpinned by our values as a company, which are:

Curiosity

We enter all our work with questions we want to know the answer to, and with a spirit of enquiry. We recognise that there is always something to learn and to discover. This is foundational to our partnerships, as well as our growth as artists.

Boldness

We will always strive to make lasting, original, strange, and beautiful artworks. This unifies us and fires us up.

Generosity

We love to give gifts – an experience, a bowl of soup, time, and care. This characterises our working environments as well as our artistic creations.
